Kyuubey (キュゥべぇ)

He is a familiar who can grant any wish to a certain girl, on the condition that she becomes a Puella Magi and fights against witches.
 
When someone makes a contract with him, he extracts their soul and places it inside a Soul Gem, replacing their body with a shell that's more resilient to fighting witches.

He has made contracts with Mami, Kyoko, Homura, and Sayaka, and shows particular interest in making Madoka a Puella Magi.

It is unknown if there are other familiars besides him. He can only be seen or heard by Puella Magi and those who have potential to become a Puella Magi. He also disposes of used Grief Seeds for the Puella Magi, because, if they are used too extensively, the witch could become reborn from the Grief Seed. He also constantly tries to find chances to persuade girls who have potential to become Puella Magi to form a contract with him, despite the fact that he knows the dangers that Puella Magi face. Much to his dismay, he cannot force a girl to become a Puella Magi.

He doesn't fully understand human values and questions any perceived differences between himself and humans. For example, when Madoka claims that he is cruel for forming contracts with girls and turning them into Puella Magi, he compares his actions to the act of humans slaughtering livestock, saying that, unlike humans, who show a lack of interest and sympathy for other creatures' values when it comes to their own survival, he at least recognizes humans as being sentient beings and tries to negotiate with them. Therefore, Kyuubey is neither evil nor good, just a survivor like everyone else.
Kyuubey is an "Incubator" and from an advanced alien species whose civilization is located far away from Earth. A long time ago, his species took alarm to the gradual heat death of the universe, and, in their search for a solution to it, encountered a species on Earth, humans, who exhibited emotions, something Kyuubey's species does not have. They then subsequently discovered a type of energy called emotional energy that could be used efficiently counter entropy, and also realized that teenage human females, who are very emotionally unstable during their mental and physical development throughout puberty, harbor the most emotional energy of all humans.

Therefore, it is Kyuubey's duty to form contracts with teenage girls and to collect the emotional energy that is created when the girl becomes a Puella Magi. However, it is also his duty to collect the massive amount of emotional energy that is created when a Puella Magi transforms into a witch, and to consume Grief Seeds, which also contain large amounts of emotional energy.

It seems that negative emotions such as hatred and despair yield more emotional energy than positive emotions, since Kyuubey comments that the amount of emotional energy created when a girl becomes a Puella Magi is nothing compared to the explosion of emotional energy created when a Puella Magi transforms into a witch. Thus, it could be said that Kyuubey's main purpose is to "incubate" girls' souls in Soul Gems until they become filled with so much negative emotion that they transform into Grief Seeds and "hatch" into witches, and to then "harvest" the emotional energy created from the transformation.

Kaname Madoka (鹿目 まどか)

A 14-year-old girl whose life changes when she encounters the Puella Magi Homura and the familiar Kyubey, who offers to transform her into a Puella Magi herself. She sees herself as a person without special qualities or talents, and after seeing Mami fighting against witches, wants to be a wonderful and cool Puella Magi like her. She is a rather selfless girl who wishes to be a magical girl simply so that she can help others. She allegedly has a large amount of magical potential within her.

Following Mami's death, she becomes uncertain about becoming a Puella Magi, becoming more so as the dark secrets of the Puella Magi are revealed to her. She is kind, gentle, averse to fighting, and wishes that everyone would get along, sometimes even putting her own life at risk to help others. In previous timelines that Homura had experienced, Madoka had become a Puella Magi, wielding a magic bow and arrow. According to Kyubey, she is capable of becoming the strongest Puella Magi and the most terrible witch, capable of destroying the world, which is why he is most interested in forming a contract with her.

Kagami Hiiragi (柊かがみ)

Kagami is the older fraternal twin sister of Tsukasa. In school, her grades are excellent and she studies very hard. She was even the class president of her class in her first year. She is in a different class than Konata and Tsukasa, but she frequently comes to their class during lunch time to eat with them. Additionally, Kagami chose the humanities course in her second year so that she could be with her friends, but she was the only one separated into a different classroom; the same occurred in her third year. Kagami, seldom referred to as "Kagamin", is a bit egotistic, but is somewhat weak in cooking.

Kagami's physique is average. She has long light purple hair, and wears a ribbon tied into pig-tails, and her sharp eyes are light violet. Kagami is the stereotypical "tsukkomi" character, however, she is prone to become shy at times, hence being a tsundere character as well.

Much like Konata, Kagami likes video games, but plays a different genre than Konata: Kagami likes to play scrolling shooters. She loves to read light novels, but she is lonely that no one around her has the same interest as her.

Tsukasa Hiiragi (柊つかさ)

Tsukasa is the younger fraternal twin sister of Kagami and lives in a six-member family household with her parents. She is in the same class as Konata though isn't good at studying or at sports, but excels in cooking.

Tsukasa's physique is a little smaller than average. She has short, light-purple hair, and wears a ribbon like a head band in it, and her droopy eyes are light violet. She is portrayed as a stereotypical klutz and as a "healing-type" character. She spends a lot of time sleeping.

 

Akira Kogami (小神 あきら)

Akira is a junior high school student who is also the captain of the Lucky ☆ Star informational ad section called "Lucky Channel" in the Comptiq magazine. Akira's appearance is as follows: she has short salmon pink hair, she has an ahoge towards the right side of her head, and has golden yellow eyes. Her school uniform is too big on her as her hands are too short for its sleeves. Akira tends to be very energetic, and her chief form of greeting is "Oha-Lucky~!" Akira is a veteran voice actress who occasionally falls out of character whenever she gets annoyed by Minoru Shiraishi, giving a raw voiced, violent and Chain Smoking personality. 

Yuuji Sakamoto (坂本雄二)

Yuuji Sakamoto is the class representative of class F. In the series, the class rep position is assigned to the smartest student of that class. He is cool, collected, and exhibit surprisingly high intelligence and foresight unexpected of a student from class F. In volume 1, his strategies and tactics had helped class F to attain victory after victory, until the duels with class A in which he overestimated his ability in elementary school level Japanese history. Yuuji was once known as a child prodigy in his childhood. The only reason why he ended up in class F was because he did not study at all and he holds the strong belief that grades are not everything. However, due to the consequences he 'suffered' from his defeat from Shōko Kirishima, his childhood friend and also the top student of his level, he became motivated to study again, and in the later volumes, his Shoukanjuu became reasonably strong in just a few months due to his test scores improving by leaps and bounds.

It is implied that he is actually smarter than his childhood friend, Shouko. After the tournament in volume 2, he acquired a platinum bracelet which allows him to control the size of the force field of his Shoukanjuu, allowing him to form a one-man army choke point since humans cannot pass through this force field.

He bears no ill intention towards Shouko, but due to her unyielding obsession with marrying him since their childhood days, he sees her as having a few loose screws in her mind, and fears to even think of his future if he does marry her. In the anime, its suggested that they act like a married couple though she tends to treat him as a slave. Yuuji is close to Akihisa to the point where they can actually communicate without any words. A gag in the series is that Yuuji will attempt to decipher a complicated expression on Akihisa and comment on a series of events that must have taken place. While he meant it as a joke, he is always a spot-on when this happens. His Shoukanjuu wears an outfit that makes it look like a punk, and is armed with brass knuckles.
 

Tamazuki Inugamigyoubu (隠神刑部 玉章)

Leader of the 88 kiyakou of the four kingdoms, his father is the head of the 808 (Shikoku Hachijuukakki Yakou) Tanuki. He is able to inspire his men through his charisma but sees them as disposable, he sees through Rikuo's power and seeks to return the world to darkness, even inviting Rikuo to join his group behind him in order to do so. He gained his power by killing his allies and brothers using the Maō's Hammer, the very sword that defeated his clan. He was defeated by Rikuo and spared on his father's wishes on the condition he never leave Shikoku and he holds a memorial for those he killed.
